Seeking the Questions: Field Notes from Rural India, is a collection of 25 essays authored by interns of Abhijit Sen Rural Internship programme. The essays included in this volume are observations and experiences of young students based on field-research. The diversity of locations and issues explored highlights the wide range of challenges faced by rural communities. These reports offer the reader a glimpse into the multiple layers of rural life, shaped by geographical, cultural, and socio-economic factors. At the same time, they demonstrate the value of field-based research in deepening our understanding of these challenges—research that is informed by the lived experiences of the communities studied and the interns themselves. This volume serves not only as a contribution to the current academic discourse but also as a reminder of the importance of engaging with rural India in a meaningful and informed way
Connecting the Dots: Field Notes from Rural India, brings together 20 selected essays by interns from the third cohort of the ASRI program, broadly categorised into six sub-sections: Non-farm livelihoods and income diversification; forest conservation, livelihoods, and forest rights; aspects of rural-urban migration; village commons and resource management; marginalised groups navigating rural India; and development outcomes and government policy. The title also highlights the methodology behind the book: immersive, field-based research that requires attentive observation, reflection, and the linking of disparate experiences to make sense of the broader landscape. By connecting these dots, the book not only captures the challenges and aspirations of rural communities but also illuminates the subtle interconnections that shape their daily lives, offering readers a richer, more nuanced perspective of India beyond the urban gaze.
